4/11- 4/12
Left My Old KY Home State Park a little earlier today because we had some stops to make before we drove down to Nashville, TN and a big thunderstorm with tornadoes was coming across the state of KY by noontime. Stopped at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park three miles south of Hodgenville. There is a visitor center there with a small museum, movie, trails and a 19th KY cabin typical of the cabins that Lincoln was born in. Lincoln only lived on this farm for three years then moved to another farm nearby. KY had a big problem with land purchases and who owned what because our government in DC kept on giving away land that they didn’t own. His family eventually left KY to move to Illinois because the second farm ownership was challenged. This is the same reason that Daniel Boone’s family left the state. The park has picnic tables, nature trails and springs.
Heading down interstate 65 we also stopped in Bowling Green for a visit to the National Corvette Museum. This was always George’s dream owning a corvette. Great museum and so many of the cars have been donated. When we came out the rains had come faster than it was expected. We listen to the weather stations a lot on this trip. The storm stopped for awhile and when we reached Nashville we hit another storm.
Stayed at Seven Points COE Campground, J Percy Priest Dam, Nashville TN
Site 33 with golden age pass $12
Typical COE campground – beautiful sites, water, electricity, table, lantern holder and half the sites right on a lake. There is a boat launching area, beach, fishing and each site even has a table to work on the fish you catch. Bathhouses are clean and small but depending on your site a nice walk away. This is in the Nashville area with lots to do – the Hermitage is only six miles away. We were there during a tornado warning, thunderstorm and high winds and the drainage of the sites was good. 60 sites in all and a laundry facility is available. We would definitely return but there are about seven other COE campgrounds in the Nashville area to try which is hard to believe that there are so many right near a good size city. This COE campground is one of the most popular in the country and it opens around April 1 and closes October 31.
We had a beautiful site right on the water and wanted to take our kayak out but the waves were too high. We just missed another tornado but after midnight last night another storm came through with high winds and we had to bring the slide out in because we didn’t want the cover to rip. Our second day at this campsite the sun was out and we had a great day.
