Natchez Plantations
Natchez, MS -The second and third day in Natchez we toured all over this great city. We went to the visitor center and walked around this cute town on the Mississippi. Toured Stanton, Longwood and Melrose plantations. So much history here! Visited downtown the Johnson House and the church where the history of the town is displayed with historical pictures. We met many of our fellow campers on the streets here and everyone exchanged ideas about what to see and visit. All our tour guides were excellent and the homes were all unique. There are still many more that we did not visit. The Garden Club Volunteers help to keep up the maintenance of the homes as well as give the tours. Many tourists come during the spring and fall when they open up most of the homes in town during a three week period and the guides dress up as southern belles. There is a walk along the Mississippi down under where the casino is and a number of well known bars. The views from the river walk are beautiful. We spent two full days in Natchez and we were glad that we did. Everyone that we met told us we must visit Natchez.
WEATHER REPORT – We have had excellent weather for the last two days. George and I have been lucky. We found out that Vicksburg closed their casinos, RV park and most of the town because of the Mississippi flooding two days after we left. Grand Gulf is closed two days after we left. Natchez is on higher ground but Vadalia,LA across the river will go under. Most of the residents and businesses from Vidalia have already rented out storage buildings in Natchez to bring their supplies and furniture over here. We were so glad that we chose not to stay in the RV park on the Mississippi in Vidalia because a ranger told us today everything including the bridge was in the process of being shut down. Tomorrow we are heading down 61 towards Baton Rouge, LA and then down the river road. We have been told that even though it is on the Mississippi it does not have the same flooding problems as these other towns because they have backup places to put the extra flooding. We will see!
